Oral Hygiene

Simply put, oral hygiene is all about keeping the mouth clean. Oral hygiene is considered to be the best means of prevention of dental cavities, gingivitis, periodontitis, and other dental disorders. Having good oral hygiene will also help to prevent bad breath (halitosis). In the long run, good oral hygiene is absolutely necessary in order for just about every person to maintain the overall health of their teeth and mouth.

Oral hygiene has two main aspects - personal and professional care. Both are covered in some detail below.

Personal care
Careful and frequent brushing of the teeth (using a toothbrush) and flossing (using dental floss) will help to prevent the build-up of plaque and calculus (tartar), both of which can lead to cavities. Ultimately, if dental cavities develop, it could cost you thousands of dollars in the long run to drill out the cavities and insert dental fillings to fix them.

Your teeth should be brushed at least twice daily, preferably after every meal and at bedtime, and flossed at least once per day. For some individuals, flossing may be recommended after each and every meal. You should definitely consult a dentist or dental hygienist if you need a proper demonstration or instruction on brushing and flossing techniques.

Special appliances or tools may be recommended to supplement (but not to replace) regular brushing and flossing. This could include special toothpicks, water irrigation, or other devices.

Professional care
Regular tooth cleaning by a dentist or dental hygienist is important to remove plaque that may develop (even with careful brushing and flossing), especially in areas that are typically difficult for a patient to reach on his/her own at home. Professional cleaning typically includes tooth scaling and tooth polishing and will involve the use of various instruments or devices to loosen and remove deposits from the teeth.

Some dentists will recommend that you have your teeth professionally cleaned every six months. It is important to note though that more frequent cleaning and examination may be necessary during the treatment of some dental/oral disorders. Routine examination of the teeth is recommended at least once per year.
